It is possible, but we would not recommend it. Door stays are designed to keep a door in position, rather than bear weight. Our N2000 can act as a lid stay but we would not advise it to be used on heavy lids. If you are using a door stay as a lid stay, you should note that you are using a part outside of its designed function, so we cannot approve its use. The key phrase is “at your own risk”
No. A soft down stay depends on gravity to perform the closing action. If you mount the stay horizontally, it will need constant pressure (ie pushed by hand) to close. With people applying pressure it is impossible to keep the pressure constant, and there is always a danger that the force will exceed the torque rating of the stay.
